We’ve just wrapped up the fourth week of fishing on both the Rio Grande and Menendez rivers, hosting a group of international anglers from Europe and the US.
Water levels remained similar to the previous week, but by mid-week, light rain upstream caused a slight tea color to the river. Techniques stayed consistent, with small flies, long leaders, and Type 3 sinking lines used in deeper holes. The weather remained steady, with some strong winds but a consistent westward direction that allowed for productive fishing every day. Temperatures stayed stable, with cooler nights that helped maintain balanced water temperatures.
The fish were actively moving throughout the system during their migration upriver, which kept us on our toes. With fresh fish running, we focused on chasing them. This constant movement meant we didn’t spend too much time at the main holding spots, instead covering all available water in the beats to ensure we were in the right place at the right time.
The tackle of choice was primarily light double-hand and switch rods for the Rio Grande, while single-hand and switch rods worked best for the Menendez River.
All anglers connected with fish, with sizes ranging from 6 lbs to 19 lbs, mostly fresh fish, though a few darker specimens were also caught. Another successful week on the water, and we look forward to what’s ahead!
