Villa María Lodge – Week 6: January 31st to February 7th, 2025

Believe it or not, we’re already halfway through the season!

Against all odds, the weather has remained surprisingly stable. The strong winds and rains that were forecasted never arrived, allowing the river to stay at a good level, steadily dropping throughout the week. Some days saw pulses of water from the mountains causing slight increases in water levels, but these changes never impacted the fishing.
With conditions remaining steady, so did our approach to catching the sea trout of the Río Grande. Switch rods or short two-handed rods (up to 13 feet), light lines, and small flies were the go-to choice during daylight hours. As the light faded, we increased the profile and volume of our flies to trigger those violent, aggressive strikes.

This week, the highlights were more about size than numbers. Every angler landed fish over 16 lbs! Maurice kicked things off with a stunning 23-lb male, only to be followed just 10 minutes later by his friend Bruno, who battled and landed an incredible 24-lb sea-run beauty. Well done, guys!

Looking ahead to next week, we’re expecting more great weather with light winds, cooler temperatures, and a river that will continue to drop and clear. Things are shaping up nicely for another week of epic fishing!
