As the season progresses, the action at Pirá Lodge remains relentless, with impressive numbers of dorado landed in both the marsh and the Corriente River. Most fish range from 3 to 5 lbs, while larger dorado—around 10 lbs—are primarily being found in the river. Along the way, we’ve also encountered some hefty catfish.
With water levels steadily dropping, the channels are in great shape, concentrating the fish and revealing sandbanks in the river. These conditions have created the perfect setup for dry-fly fishing with mouse patterns, gurglers, and poppers. Some of the most thrilling takes of the season happened on topwater, including an unforgettable session for Ginny G., who landed 54 dorado on a 5wt rod in the marsh using mouse flies.
In the Corriente River, bigger fish have been taking swing flies on sinking lines—much like traditional salmon or trout fishing. Nicholas C. made the most of this technique, landing several 8- and 9-lb dorado. In certain stretches, we’ve also been able to step out of the boat and fish from the bank, adding another exciting dimension to the experience.
The Iberá Marshland continues to be as rich in wildlife as it is in fishing. Each day on the water brings encounters with caimans basking along the banks, capybaras moving in and out of the shallows, and marsh deer wading through the reeds. The air is filled with the calls of countless bird species, from flocks of ibis and ducks to elegant storks and even the occasional sighting of flamingos. The sheer abundance of life in this vast wetland makes every fishing trip feel like an immersive wildlife expedition.
As summer peaked, rising temperatures and a lack of rain caused water levels to drop throughout the river and marsh. Despite these conditions concentrating the fish and leading to outstanding fishing, a solid rainfall was becoming essential to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. Fortunately, we recently received the rain we needed. Water levels have since stabilized, cooling temperatures down to 76°F. Clarity remains excellent, and in some shallow channels, fish can be seen moving through the vegetation—just like an aquarium.
With refreshed conditions and fish still feeding aggressively, the season continues to deliver unforgettable moments on the water.
