Villa María Lodge – Week 8: February 14th to 21st, 2025

This week at Villa María Lodge was mostly stable, much like the previous two, but we had a couple of unpredictable days. Midweek, a cold front from the south hit us hard, dropping temperatures to 0°C and cooling the water to 7°C. But just a day later, we saw temperatures bounce back to 20°C, with the water rising to 14°C. This rollercoaster weather made fishing a bit trickier.

Despite the fluctuations, it was a great week overall, with solid catches. The highlight was an impressive 23-pound male, landed by Ölof at the very last moment of the day. What a way to wrap up the session!

With the river conditions remaining steady, we stuck to the same approach as the past few weeks—light lines and small flies. On colder days, however, we had to rely on extra-fast sinking tips (T-17 in some cases) to reach fish that were sluggish and holding deep. Larger flies were only necessary during those final minutes of daylight when the sun had fully set.

Looking ahead, next week’s forecast calls for stronger winds and a significant drop in temperature—clear signs that autumn is approaching. This change should stir things up, with big sea-run brown trout males becoming more aggressive. It’s shaping up to be an exciting week ahead!
